I used to borrow hope. Now I can sew it.” After months of training, a young graduate reflects on her first finished skirt, the skills she’s gained, and the doors opening ahead—one stitch at a time.

She joined our Tailoring School Program last year with two goals: learn a skill she could turn into income, and make something for her little sister to wear to school. She started with threading and safety, moved to measurements and patterns, and practiced—again and again—until her stitches ran steady.

“I learned to unpick gently and try again. That is my favorite lesson—undo, breathe, sew it back with patience.”

What the training gave her

  • Technical skill: machine care, measurements, cutting, finishing

  • Design basics: choosing fabrics, reading patterns, adapting for fit

  • Income readiness: pricing, simple bookkeeping, and customer care for local repairs and uniform orders

When her class held a small graduation, Miriam wore the skirt she made. Her sister twirled in a matching one. A simple seam became a door—toward income, dignity, and choice.

“Now I can repair clothes in our neighborhood, save for a better machine, and help pay school fees. I want other girls to feel what I felt—strong, useful, proud.”
